Course Descriptions

ACADEMIC ENGLISH I (ENG 101) - Compulsory
This course is designed to help students improve their critical reading and thinking skills, and academic writing skills required of them in their undergraduate studies and develop an awareness of basic academic conventions. Students will read a variety of texts centering on a theme to become aware of the features of texts written for different purposes and use them to put forward well supported arguments in a well-structured essay format in accordance with the academic conventions of writing. They will also develop their speaking skills by participating in and contributing to class discussions and giving presentations based on the readings they have done during the course. 

ACADEMIC ENGLISH II (ENG 102) - Compulsory
This course is designed to build on the skills the students learned in ENG 101, and to advance their skills to a level whereby they can produce a research paper. Throughout the course, students will read a variety of academic articles in order to refine their awareness of the features of texts, develop their ability to evaluate and synthesise information, and conduct basic independent research. They will learn to write a research paper with proper academic tone, language and style using the APA Manual 6th Edition. Students will also be expected to develop their speaking skills by participating in and contributing to class discussions and presenting their research papers.
